Divers and underwater photographers are attracted to Anilao for the incredible diversity, rich reefs, variety of fish, unexpected critters, and colorful nudibranchs turning up at every corner. Divers who enjoy the thrill of blackwater diving will find Anilao irresistible as it offers a surreal and otherworldly journey for those who dare venture into its mysterious depths.

BATANES

Batanes is a group of 10 volcanic islands situated in the northern part of the Philippines, three of which are inhabited. It is well-known for its excellent dive sites with superb visibility. Often referred to as the "New Zealand" of the Philippines, Batanes enjoys pleasant weather, beautiful hills, and breathtaking coastal areas. The province has preserved its authentic Filipino architecture, including Ivatan stone houses, traditional culture, and cuisine that have stood the test of time.

Whether you are a diver or a non-diver, Batanes has something attractive for you. Visitors can explore the islands and appreciate their originality, as the province has declared itself a protected landscape and seascape area.

DAUIN

Dauin, 15km south of Dumaguete, is famous for its black volcanic sandy beaches and muck diving. It is a haven for photographers into macro critters. Along Dauin are over 30 dive sites, with the must-visit spot being the famous Apo Island. Nearby, dive sites at Siquijor offer vibrant walls and wreck diving.

Dumaguete is known as the "City of Gentle People." Besides diving, Dumaguete offers other activities such as trekking, golfing, and dolphin and whale watching. During the no-fly time, you may also want to include skin-diving with whale sharks in Oslob in your itinerary.

MALAPASCUA

Malapascua, in the Visayan Sea north of Cebu, is a well-known dive destination for sighting thresher sharks and the seasonal tiger sharks and hammerheads. It is a small island surrounded by coral gardens and coral-walls and has excellent dive spots.

Monad Shoal and Kemod Shoal are known cleaning stations for the thresher sharks and other pelagic fishes. They would surface from depths over 200m to about 15 to 20m atop the long rock stump at the edge of the drop to have the parasites on their body cleaned. The display of this symbiotic relationship allows divers to witness these magnificent fishes in action.

MOALBOAL

Moalboal, meaning bubbling water, is well-known for its unique sardine-run experience. The resident sardines inhabit the tropical waters along the southwestern coast of Cebu Island. Scuba divers, snorkelers, and now freedivers visit for that perfect Instagram-worthy photo.

Moalboal overlooks the 160km long Tanon Strait separating Cebu and Negros. Beneath the water, gigantic coral-clad walls house a rich diversity of marine life, including zillions of sardines. A short distance away, Pescador Island offers more vibrant coral reefs and picturesque swim-throughs.

Despite its popularity, Moalboal retains its charm offering an array of entertainment, wellness spas, and a diverse selection of restaurants serving East-West cuisines. No wonder Moalboal is one of the top dive destinations in the Philippines..

Puerto Galera, a UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve since 1977, boasts over 30 outstanding dive sites just a short distance away. Romblon is an archipelagic province of the Philippines made up of several islands located within the Verde Island Passage. LEMBEH

Lembeh, Indonesia is renowned for muck diving. Although it may not be as easily accessible as other popular muck diving destinations, it still lures macro photographers from all over the world to capture the abundance and most unusual critters, nudibranchs, and other "out-of-this-world" sea creatures.

Lembeh Strait, near Manado on Sulawesi, is great for diving almost year-round. The best months for critter-spotting are July and August, while the best visibility is from October to December. You can check out macro-photography social media platforms to see some amazing photographs, many of which were taken at Lembeh.

CORON/APO REEF

The 24 Japanese ships sunk in Coron Bay on Sept 24, 1944, by the US Navy are now home to many different species of marine life. The wrecks, which range from 120m to 160m in length, some at shallow depths, are still in relatively good condition. This makes them suitable for divers with varying levels of experience to explore and appreciate the unique history of the area.

On the way to Coron Bay, you'll come across the UNESCO heritage site of Apo Reef. This is a protected marine parks and offers the opportunity to spot shark species including threshers and hammerheads. Apo Reef is also home to 650 species of fish, rays, turtles, and 400 types of soft and hard corals. The best way to explore these two magnificent dive sites is by boarding a liveaboard vessel.

TUBBATAHA

Tubbataha is a renowned UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest Marine Protected Area in the Philippines, showcasing impressive marine biodiversity. It is located at the heart of the Coral Triangle and is home to over 600 species of fish, 370 species of corals, nesting sea turtles, and a dozen species of sharks, whales, and dolphins.

The best time to dive in the pristine waters of Tubbataha is from mid-March to mid-June. Nominated in 2018 as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, the Tubbataha Reef has two coral atolls – the North Atoll and South Atoll, and a smaller one called Jessie Beazley Reef. The only way to dive into these marine sanctuaries is by liveaboard vessels.

MAUMERE/ALOR

Maumere is the capital of Sikka, a regency within East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. The islands in the 1,675 km2 area are collectively known as the island of Flores.

Alor is the largest island in the Alor Archipelago. Located at the eastern end of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain, Alor includes islands like Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Komodo, and Flores. Alor covers an area of 2,125 km2.

DISCOVERY SCUBA

Discovery Scuba is a dive program for someone who wishes to experience underwater diving for the first time. The experience will help the potential scuba diver better understand what diving is about and whether he or she will take to the next level of scuba training.

The Discovery Scuba Program (DSP) is a short one-day training. It will involve theoretical and practical lessons. During DSP, trainee will learn the use of mask, snorkel, dive regulator, buoyancy control device, dive gauges, fins, and a scuba tank. Additionally, trainee will also learn the effect of water pressure, underwater communication, and how to dive safely. The practical lessons include pool sessions, and diving in a safe and shallow open water environment.

DSP is suitable for adult and children over 10 years old.

OPEN WATER

Open Water Scuba (OW) certification allows a diver to dive up to a maximum depth of 18m. Diving, like any sports, requires practice. Having an OW certification allows a diver more opportunities to dive regularly, gaining more experience and skills.

The OW Diver Course is a 3–4-day course. It includes all the basic lessons listed in the Discovery Scuba Program. But in OW course, the trainee will be taught more in-depth diving knowledge, typically via video lessons, online tutorial, quizzes and a final examination. The practical lessons will first be conducted in training pools and later in a safe and shallow (18m) open water environment. When the trainee has demonstrated his/her diving skills satisfactorily, the dive instructor will award an OW certificate.

Both adult and children over 10 years old may take the OW course.

GUE (Global Underwater Explorers) was created to increase the quality of aquatic education and develop global applicable diving standards and training. It was founded in 1998 by conservationists, explorers, and educators. A non-profit organization, GUE is committed to redefining the nature of aquatic activity in 3 specific areas – education, conservation and exploration.

GUE maintains a high standard and discipline in its dive training program, as well as the level of skills and fitness amongst its dive instructors. To ensure the quality of the divers GUE certifies, only highly trained and skilled GUE instructors, with years of continuous GUE trainings and practical in-water experiences, are allowed to teach. DiveReward highly recommend GUE training to divers who intend to take their diving interests beyond recreational level.

BASIC FREEDIVING

Freediving is becoming popular in recent years. The Freediving Course requires trainee to attend classroom or via eLearning to acquire the theoretical knowledge of freediving. The practical training includes learning the different breath holding technique, initially, in a confined water environment such as a swimming pool. From there, trainee would proceed to the open water sessions to practise free water immersion and constant weight freediving (of up to 10m).

The Basic Freediving course is a 2 to 3-day course. The prerequisites include trainee having adequate swimming skills and must be in good physical health. The minimum age of a freediving trainee is 15 years old. Like SCUBA , freediving also practices proper buddy system.
